Hi John,

Windows 10 includes an interface for managing startup applications in a location i.e Task Manager. This makes it easier to specify which startup applications can start with Windows and use your system resources.

Method 1:
There are several ways of accessing the Task Manager in Windows 8 or Windows 10. One method is to right-click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager from the popup window.

  1. You could also move your mouse to the extreme, lower left corner of the screen until the Start screen button displays. Then, left click to access the Power User menu, or press the Windows key + X. Select Task Manager from the popup menu.02_start_task_manager_poweruser_menu
  2. Initially, the Task Manager automatically opens in compact mode, only listing what programs are running. To access the additional features of Task Manager, click the down arrow button next to More details.
  3. Click the Startup tab. This tab displays all programs that start with Windows. To prevent a program from starting when Windows starts, right-click on the program and select Disable from the popup menu.05_disabling_startup_program
  4. You can also select the program and click the Disable button at the bottom of the dialog box.
  5. To close the Task Manager, select Exit from the File menu, or click the Close (X) button in the upper, right corner of the dialog box.
  6. Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

For Windows 7, a program starts automatically in Windows because of a shortcut in the Startup folder in the Start menu. The program may also run automatically from a registry entry. Following are three sets of directions you can follow to remove programs from automatic startup.

Removing a shortcut
In all Windows operating systems, the shortcut will remain in the Recycle Bin until you empty it.
To remove a shortcut from the Startup folder:
  1. From the Start menu, click All Programs, and then click Startup.
  2. Right-click the program you don't want to open at startup and click Delete.

Disabling items not in the Startup folder

Some startup items have no shortcut in the Startup folder. You can disable these with  the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) in Windows 7. Otherwise, they are only accessible through the registry. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with registry editing, use these utilities.
  1. Press Win+r. In the "Open:" field, type msconfig and press Enter.
  2. Click the Startup tab.
  3. Uncheck the items you do not want to launch on startup.
    Note:

It may take some time to identify which items to check and which to uncheck. Some items will be easy to identify (e.g., Microsoft Office), some may be slightly confusing (e.g., realsched), and some will be cryptic (e.g., 000StTHK or QFSSCHD110). If you cannot determine what an entry is (and therefore whether you should uncheck it or not), you may want to use a search engine to research the individual entry. Keep in mind there are some entries that you should avoid unchecking (e.g., virus scanners).

  4. When you have finished making your selections, click OK.
  5. In the box that appears, click Restart to restart your computer.
I hope this helps in removing the applications from running at startup.

Regards,
Lokesh

I kept getting the blue screen with Driver Power State Failure error message and then my computer would restart. I found your product and it did not happen any more. I just purchased an anti-virus (kaspersky) and now it is doing it again. It is so frustrating. My computer is only 6 months old. It is a Asus desktop.
