what is a .ipk file?
An Itsy package Ffile is saved in an archive file format using derived compression specifications similar to the standards used by the Debian package algorithm. These are also integrated with encoding functionalities implemented into the IPK file format. These IPK files are mainly used for facilitating installations of programs and other tools developed for handheld devices. The content of these IPK files may include program specifications and installation data that may be referenced by the operating system of the handheld device during the installation of an application associated to the IPK file. The data stored in an IPK file may point the OS of the handheld device to the directory locations certain program files required by the application should be placed. These IPK files are affixed with the .ipk extension and certain configuration data and settings entered by the author of an IPK file can also be entered into the application itself after the installation process has been completed.

Internet PacKage
Internet PacKage
Internet PacKage is an application with a set of functionalities that are coded with file compression and decompression specifications similar to the standards found in the Debian package algorithm. This tool is generally classified as a file compression and decompression application, and support along with development has been discontinued for Internet PacKage as of this writing. This file compression and decompression program can be used to create IPK archives that contain files and folders selected by the user, and the content of these IPK files can be extracted through the corresponding functionalities that are embedded into Internet PacKage for decompressing IPK archives. These IPK files are used as installers of applications that were developed for compatible handheld devices, and for file archives that need to be transmitted to and from supported computers and these handheld devices.
a word of warning
Be careful not to rename the extension on .ipk files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .ipk. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
