what is a .tra file?
The content of a WinTrack railroad track file is integrated with binary data formatting standards in order for this data file to store railroad track and landscape data used by the WinTrack software. Other pieces of data that can be entered and saved in these WinTrack railroad track files may include digital 3D images used for the train and track models along with the layout elements implemented into those 3D images. Certain encoding specifications are implemented into these WinTrack railroad track files so the content of these data files can be stored in the TRA format. Affixed with the .tra extension, digital 3D images of background details like trees and cars used in scenes simulated by the WinTrack software can also be stored in these WinTrack railroad track files. The WinTrack software is classified as a program built with a set of functionalities used for developing railway designs. WinTrack is a Germany-based development group that created the WinTrack application and the TRA file format.

a word of warning
Be careful not to rename the extension on .tra files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
what is a file extension?
A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .tra. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
